Frequently Asked Questions

How much riding experience do I need?
You must at least possess a valid motorcycle license to participate. You don't have to be an expert rider or have off road experience, but you must feel confident in your abilities and your motorcycle to ride in variable situations. It is essential that you have some experience in long distance riding.

How are the riding and weather conditions?
The ride is considered moderate in difficulty and will cover everything from endless straightaways to winding mountain roads. The route that we take is 100% paved and for the most part in decent to good condition. There will however be a few stretches that are in disrepair and will have potholes and rough patches that you will have to be able to negotiate. We will supply maps and travel logs containing descriptions of expected road conditions so that you are properly prepared for the day's ride. You also have to be comfortable riding in variable weather conditions. There will more than likely be occasions when we'll ride through rain, and we may experience some high winds. For the most part the weather will be warm, but it can get chilly in the mountains.

What kind of bike do I need?
Included in the price is the use of a Suzuki V-Strom 650 motorcycle. If you choose the bring your own motorcycle, the entire route is paved so pretty much any type of touring, cruiser, or dual-purpose bike would do. We suggest that the engine size be 500 cc or larger, but a smaller bike should be all right as long as you can cruise comfortably at around 60 mph. Just make sure that the bike is sound, thoroughly inspected with brand new tires and has wire spoke wheels to handle the pot holes. We also advise having sturdy lockable panniers and a soft pack fastened to the rear to hold any gear.

What’s included in the price?
Use of a brand new Suzuki V-Strom 650 motorcycle, accommodations at top hotels, 14 meals throughout the trip, insurance, maps, travel logs, support vehicle, medics, mechanics, sat phones for emergencies and secured parking.

What’s not included?
Transportation to and from Brownsville, Texas, lunch, gas, insurance (you can purchase this through us though), tolls, alcoholic beverages, personal expenses and visas.

What happens if I get in an accident or need repairs?
We will have a support vehicle staffed with a medic and a mechanic to handle most situations. If you are not injured and just need repairs we'll try and fix the problem on the spot. However, if this is impossible we'll load the bike on the support vehicle and try to get it repaired at the closest repair shop. If the bike is beyond repair we'll have to tow it the rest of the way. You can then either ride along in the support vehicle or hitch a ride on the backseat of another rider. If your injury is minor we will have our medical staff tend to you. If the injuries are serious and you cannot go on, we will make arrangements to get you the appropriate care. The costs of any treatment and travel back to your country of origin should be covered by your travel insurance.

Do I need travel insurance?
YES. You must have travel insurance that covers at a minimum medical bills and emergency evacuation. Make sure that the policy covers motorcycle accidents. We will provide motorcycle insurance if you plan to use one of our motorcycles. If you plan on bringing your own motorcycle, you must obtain your own insurance (we can help you to arrange this).

What kind of food should I expect?
Don't expect taco bell. As the landscapes change so does the food. The food offered in Mexico is varied by region. We will provide 16 meals throughout the trip, mostly on long ride days so as when you get into town late you will not need to forage. We will be staying in many of the finest towns in Mexico, so we encourage you to explore regional specialties along with other staples of the country. For you herbivores we will offer vegetarian dishes as well. If there is anything specific that you would desire, please ask us in advnace and we'll try our best to accommodate.

What will the accomodations be like?
Throughout the trip, we will be staying at some of the finest hotels in each of the towns we will visit. Although you may need to share a room with another rider, each rider will have his or her own bed at each hotel, and all of the hotels will be equiped with air conditioning. If you are going on the trip with a friend, please let us know so that we can make sure to have you room together.

What Kind of Documents and Visas do I Need?
If you are a US citizen, you do not need any type of visa for this trip. You will need a passport with at least 6 empty pages and valid for at least 6 months past your return date. You must be the legal registered owner of the motorcycle (no lien holders) and have valid tags, registration, and title on hand along with a valid motorcycle license. We will advise you on matters of visas which need to be obtained prior to the ride.

What tools and spares do I need?
You will need a standard tool kit and basic spares. For a more comprehensive list of required and suggested gear, see our gearlist.

How is the ride set up? Do I have to ride in groups?
It is important to emphasize that this is not a race. We encourage each rider to travel at a comfortable speed but ride along with at least one other rider for safety. Before each day's ride everyone will be given a thorough briefing on what to expect with road conditions and any other directions. We don't want all of the riders to bunch up so the riders will depart when they are individually ready. The support vehicle will act as a sweeper bringing up the rear to make sure all riders are accounted for. Everyone will be able to get gas, eat lunch and take breaks whenever he or she wants.

What if I'm too tired or sick to ride?
We will have rest days throughout the journey, but we understand that some might get fatigued or party a little too much the night before. The last thing we want is to have you drowsy on the road, so if you need we'll load your bike on the support vehicle where you can get some rest until you are ready to get back on the road. Our support vehicle has the capacity to carry approximately five bikes.

Health, fitness and inoculations?
We don't expect you to be a tri-athlete, but you do need to be fit enough to ride up to 400 miles a day. We advise that you consult your personal physician about your personal fitness prior to the trip. It wouldn't hurt to get in shape for the ride. We also advise you to consult your physician about any necessary inoculations you might need.

How many miles will we travel a day?
We'll cover between 150 and 400 miles a day. There will also be four rest days.

What kind of clothes should I bring?
You can leave the tux at home. Just bring clothing that is comfortable and breaths well. It is a good idea to bring clothes made of synthetic materials because they breathe well and are easily dried. It can get a little cold in the mountains so it is a good idea to bring a light jacket or a pullover. For more detailed info on what to bring connect to the gear link on our home page.

What’s up with the nightlife?
We will organize nightly parties either at a local bar or at the hotel. Whenever possible we will negotiate price specials on drinks and other expenses that aren't covered by us.

How and where are the bikes shipped?
If you decide to purchase bike shipment through us, bikes will be crated and shipped by truck.

How much extra money do I need?
You should plan on spending approximately $50 per day on gas and food etc. Additionally, we will be taking some toll roads in Mexico that can be expensive. We strongly recommend bringing an ATM card so you can withdraw cash in local currency (pesos).

Can I bring an extra person to ride along with me on the back seat?
Any additional passengers will have to pay an additional $2,295.

Who will carry my luggage?
If you bring your own bike it is strongly advised that you have sturdy lockable panniers and a soft pack fastened to the rear to hold any additional gear. Bikes provided by Exodus South will have lockable panniers for carrying gear. The support vehicle may be able to carry some bags, but you should be able to carry your gear by yourself.

Where will the motorcycles be parked at night?
The motorcycles will be parked in a secure (locked and/or guarded) parking lot every night.
